The State of the Environment Report 2023 provides information on key aspects of the environment, including: Climate, Air, Land, Water, River Murray, Sea and Liveability. 

The Report provides recommendations to government to address the most significant environmental issues, and provides data and analysis to assist government, industry, and the community to take action to improve environmental outcomes.

Summary Report

The SOER is prepared every 5 years under the Environment Protection Act 1993. This is the 8th published SOER since 1988. The 2023 SOER adopts the international pressure-state-response model, provides recommendations to government and offers suggestions that could be applied to improve environmental outcomes.

Environmental Themes

The following section provides an overview of the state of South Australia’s environment across
7 environmental themes. Each theme identifies key messages, pressures facing our environment, trends and conditions. It is acknowledged that the themes are not mutually exclusive. Suggestions and opportunities for improvement are also highlighted.

State of the Environment 2023 Areas of Focus

Climate

Climate refers to the long-term weather pattern within a particular area. This is different to weather which changes regularly. South Australia's climate is changing.

Air

Air quality has a significant impact on human health. Poor air quality is one of the leading causes or premature death globally. 

Land

South Australia is home to diverse landscapes. It supports biodiversity, recreation, tourism, primary industries and cultural values.

Waters

Inland waters, which include rivers, creeks, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands and groundwater, play a vital role for our environment and society.

Sea

About 85% of southern Australia’s marine life is not found anywhere else in the world. Protecting our coasts and seas is crucial to maintain the services they provide.

River Murray

The River Murray is Australia's longest river at 2,508km, spanning South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. It is a vital resource and supports important ecosystems.

Liveability

Liveability defines the degree to which a place is suitable or good for living. It includes both urban and rural environments which can influence our health.

Health of Country

The EPA recognises the importance of cultural knowledge of Aboriginal peoples as the traditional custodians in protecting and restoring Country. For the first time, the SOER includes an expert report and recommendations on how we can more effectively incorporate Aboriginal cultural perspectives into our approach for protecting the environment.
